NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y., January 14, 2008 – The Health Association of Niagara County Inc. recently honored James Hughes with the Karen Albond Courage in Caring Award. Hughes is a founding member and board member for the Niagara County AKTION Club, sponsored by the Lewiston Kiwanis Club. The AKTION Club is composed of adults with developmental disabilities. Hughes is working towards his GED and working with the New York State Vocational and Educational Services for Individuals with Disabilities (VESID) to obtain a community job. Hughes has participated in many community events including the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk, the Peach Parade in Lewiston and a Lewiston Clean-Up Day. “James has set an amazing example for his fellow members,” said Tiffany Sponaugle, service coordinator at Rivershore, Inc. “He has not let his diagnosis define him. He is a great friend, leader and advocate in the community.” The Karen Albond Courage in Caring Award honors individuals in the Niagara community who persevere in service to others despite physical or developmental disabilities, or chronic illness. The award is named for Karen Albond, a longtime HANCI board member who passed away in 2003 after significant volunteer and professional service to the Niagara community. HANCI, established in 1927, promotes health, wellness and independence across generations through diversified programs and services. Additional information is available at www.hanci.com.
