Eligibility has been expanded, thanks to new federal guidelines created under the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act that was passed earlier this year. The two programs are run locally by the Health Association of Niagara County Inc., through grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Eligible volunteers receive tax-free stipends for their service. Previously, volunteers had to be 60 or older to join the programs. Now, the minimum age is 55. Also, the tax-free stipends used to be available only to individuals at 150 percent of the federal poverty level. Now, volunteers can be paid if they are at 200 percent or less of the poverty level. Deductions are allowed for certain medical expenses. "These new federal guidelines make it possible for many more people in our community to become foster grandparents and senior companions," said John W. Kinner, executive director of HANCI. "We have slots open and are looking forward to offering more opportunities to older adults who need extra income and are interested in serving their communities." Foster grandparents work with children in schools, daycare centers, after-school programs, Head Start centers and youth programs. Senior companions offer friendly visiting and support for frail, homebound elders and their caregivers. Service opportunities in both programs are available across Niagara County. Anyone interested in becoming a foster grandparent or senior companion should call the Volunteer Center at HANCI at 285-8224, ext. 239, or send an email to volunteercenter@hanci.com. Potential volunteers are also invited to enjoy tea and refreshments at 3 p.m. on Dec. 9 at HANCI, located at 1302 Main St. in Niagara Falls. Information on the programs will be shared at that time. Funded largely by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion Programs also receive support from the New York State Office for the Aging, the Niagara County Office for the Aging, local United Ways, and individual donors. # # # |
