Three foundations provide grants for HANCI programs NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y., Nov. 2, 2009 - The Health Association of Niagara County has received three foundation grants totaling nearly $205,000 for various programs to shape a healthier community. The Patrick P. Lee Foundation has awarded a $100,000 grant to HANCI for the launch of Complete Senior Care. Scheduled to open in 2010, Complete Senior Care will provide a full array of medical and social services to help frail elders in Niagara County remain living in their own homes instead of going into nursing homes. A $2 million day center and clinic located at HANCI's Niagara Falls headquarters will be the hub of Complete Senior Care, which will follow a national model known as the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly. Meanwhile, the New York State Health Foundation has awarded a $79,795 grant to HANCI through the Foundation's Economic Recovery Fund. The grant will pay for the costs of absorbing the Center for Joy and the Niagara County AIDS Task Force into HANCI. Also, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo has given a $25,000 grant to HANCI for its intensive Reading All-Stars after-school program. The program serves second graders from Harry F. Abate Elementary School who are reading one or two levels below their grade. Each group of 10 students has a certified teacher and an experienced aide. Now in its fourth year, the program is funded entirely by grants and contributions. To date, more than 140 students have left the yearlong program with reading skills at or above their grade level. "These grants show that the philanthropic community trusts HANCI to provide high-impact, innovative services to those who need them most," said John W. Kinner, executive director of HANCI. "We thank these three foundations, and all the organizations that generously support our programs." # # # |
