News Release
Community Foundation grant supports HANCI Reading All-Stars

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y., Sept. 8, 2011 - The Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo has awarded a $25,000 grant to the HANCI Reading All-Stars. This program, operated by the Health Association of Niagara County, Inc., helps at-risk 2nd and 3rd graders from Abate and Hyde Park Elementary Schools to improve their reading skills.

The HANCI Reading All-Stars program meets from 3 to 5:30 p.m. four days a week from October through April. The program serves 40 children each year. Each class is led by certified teachers, with support from classroom aides, foster grandparents and community volunteers. Thanks to intensive tutoring and individual attention, the program has shown remarkable success in helping lagging students learn to read at or above grade level. Program evaluations also show that the program helps students to improve their math
skills and classroom behavior.

The Reading-All Stars program is funded entirely through grants and contributions. Other funding sources for the 2011-12 school year include the Sisters of St. Francis Providence Fund, Unifrax Corporation and the Walmart Foundation.

For 92 years, the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo has been connecting people, ideas and resources to improve lives in Western New York. We help make the most of our community’s generosity to realize a vibrant and inclusive Greater Buffalo region with opportunity for all.  The Foundation's grant to HANCI represents 60 percent of the 2011-12 Reading All-Stars budget.
