HANCI - Services - Afternoon Reading All-Stars
Open to at-risk second and third graders from selected Niagara Falls schools, this program serves students who are struggling with reading and comprehension. This program is proven to help students achieve higher reading levels, while also offering activities that promote nutrition, socialization, physical activity, and an appreciation of the arts.
The program begins after school (3 p.m.) with a snack and time to wind down or receive help with homework. At 3:30, the teacher and teaching assistants begin focused reading instruction. Mini-lessons used for this instruction come from diagnostic testing such as running records and story retells, as well as anecdotal records from students' teachers. The students also have access to a small library as well as the Niagara Falls Public Library.
After the reading workshop, the students participate in various activities such as music, art, character education and physical development.
Major funding is provided by the John R. Oishei Foundation, First Niagara Bank, the Providence Fund of the Stella Niagara Franciscans, the Joy Family Foundation, the Maid of the Mist Corporation, Niacet Corporation, Washington Mills Electro Minerals Corporation, and the Glen and Heidi Arthurs Foundation.
Space is limited, so students must be referred by their teachers from targeted schools in Niagara Falls. To learn more, or to make a contribution to sustain the program, contact Sister Mary McCarrick at marymccarrick123@yahoo.com.
